Many of the larger scale pieces I create function as optical isolators. These machines for viewing are not simply functional mechanisms that affect the physical aspects of vision; they are also extensions of a site, or place, or state of mind while experiencing a landscape. Visual information and physical matter are used with equal footing to articulate a vision or understanding of the essence of a site.
While much of my work evokes a sense of connection to the landscape, a degree of disconnect is implied between the minds we exist in and the world outside. Many of these pieces function as analogies, for they mediate and alter the relationship between the viewer and what is perceived by the viewer.
